Optometry Education

Full time courses involves -
Lecture room theory classes – 500 hrs/yr
Demonstrations, hands-on practical sessions and seminars – 200 hrs/yr
Supervised clinical training with actual patients in eye clinics, hospitals – 300 hrs/yr
Should be done only in Educational Institutes with excellent infra Structure set up,
Qualified man power available for supervision of students when they are being trained in clinics.

Contents of Optometry Course:

Health Sciences - Human Biology, Pathology Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Eye Anatomy and Physiology, Ocular diseases, Systemic diseases and their effects on eye.
Visual Sciences – Physical and Geometrical Optics, Visual, Clinical and Dispensing Optics.
Instrumentation & Investigations – Special instruments and investigative procedures involving eye and even general body.
Treatment – Spectacles, Contact Lenses, Vision Therapy eye exercises, Low vision devices.
Management – Patient’s comprehensive health management, practice and profession management

Optometry Complete Eye checkup Includes

Use of skilled manpower
Out of 100 persons in the society
Screening can be done by 1 and 2 year professionals
Refractive Error about 25 persons
Refraction and glasses can be prescribed by 2 and 4 year qualified Optometrists
4 year graduate will also filter out 5 patients requiring medical or surgical treatment.
Medical treatment required for 5 persons
Treatment can be done ONLY by Medical Doctor

Training at different Levels

2 year diploma programs required
Train personnel to work with medical doctors
Scope of practice – Initially to work in hospitals and Primary Health Centers allowed to do eye examination and refraction under supervision (?)
Can do private practice after certain period – 5 years ?
Can upgrade to 4 year year degree courses
Should be conducted in well equipped Regional Eye Institutes and specialty eye hospitals with proper educational set up
