What is Optometry ?

Optometry is an independent vision care science which includes the examination of the human eyes and visual system required for the estimation of errors of refraction, and the fitting, manufacturing and supply of optical aids.

Who is an Optometrist ?

Optometrists are the primary healthcare practitioners of the eye and visual system who provide comprehensive eye and vision care, which includes refraction and dispensing, detection/diagnosis and management of disease in the eye, and the rehabilitation of conditions of the visual system. What does an Optometrist do ?
  • Examine the eye.
  • Diagnose the visual problem.
  • Prescribe and provide corrective treatment in the form of spectacles, contact lenses, low vision aids, orthoptics and vision therapy.
What is the minimum qualification required to do Optometry ?

Entry level for the four year Bachelors in Optometry is 12th Science with Biology and Physics.

Academic degrees such as Bachelor of Optometry, Master of Optometry and Doctor of Philosophy in Optometry are awarded by universities recognized by University Grants Commission , a statutory body responsible for the maintenance of standards of higher education in India.

No.

There are many career options available to graduates as a result of their academic and clinical experience. An Optometrist can:

  • Assist Ophthalmologists in hospitals/clinic
  • Practice at optical establishments
  • Apply for jobs overseas

  • Work with manufacturers and distributors of optical instruments, lenses, contact lenses and other allied industries
How and when do I apply for a course in Optometry ?
  • Admissions open in June for Bachelors in Optometry. Kindly approach individual college for admission details.
  • Currently there is no common entrance exam for Optometry.
How much does Optometry education cost ?

Fees vary between institutions – on an average it varies from Rs. 60,000 to 80,000 per year. Consult individual College for the current figure.
